I’ve had several days ruined by opening the fridge and expecting fresh fruit but finding them covered in mold or brown spots.

If this has happened you, then you know how frustrating and expensive it is when your fruit spoils before you can eat it.

Hopefully you’ll find these simple tips helpful in keeping your fruit and vegetables fresh for weeks at a time.

1. Clean fruit and veggies with white vinegar and water before storing. 

Rinse your fruit and veggies with white vinegar and water to prolong their shelf life.

Take one cup of water and 1 tablespoon of vinegar and use this as a produce rinse. This will help remove pesticides, prevent mold and make your fruits stay fresh a lot longer.


2. Separate bananas to slow down the ripening process.

Separate your bananas to slow down the ripening process and make them last for longer.

Separate each banana from the stem to make them last longer and prevent them from becoming brown and ripening too fast.

3. Place berries on a paper towel. 

Store berries in the fridge in an open container on top of paper towels to prevent mold growth.

Grapes, blueberries and strawberries are known for growing mold pretty fast so when they are fresh, simply remove them from the bag, rinse with with hot water and pat dry. Store the berries on a few paper towels in an open container (preferably glass) in the fridge.

4. Don’t place potatoes, onions or garlic in the fridge. 

Do not store tomatoes in the fridge. This will make them go bad faster.

Instead, place these food items in a cool dark place to prolong their shelf life for a month or longer, especially tomatoes as they are one of many fruits that are ethylene emitters.

This type gas that’s naturally released from these fruits and veggies can cause them to deteriorate quite rapidly in a closed space such as the fridge.

Therefore, they should be store on a counter away from direct sunlight and other heat sources. Onions can last for several months by simply storing them in pantyhose and hanging from the ceiling.

5. Keep citrus fruits, such as oranges, on the counter. 

Store citrus fruit on the counter away from direct sunlight.

Citrus fruit should be stored away from direct sunlight, at room temperature in an open space. This will greatly reduce mold growth and rapid spoiling of the fruit.

6. Place peppers in a paper bag. 

Place peppers in paper bags before storing in fridge to keep them fresh for longer.

This will help keep them crisp and reduce moisture build-up which creates an environment for mold growth.

7. Make salad last longer by blowing air into the bag.
