I hate spiders.
I mean there’s just something about them that freaks me all the way out. When I see one anywhere near me, there’s going to be a total melt-down as I scramble out the room screaming for my life.
Yes, I admit that my fear of spiders may be somewhat irrational but hey, I’m only human.
In my quest to find a way to get rid of spiders in my home, I came across some information that totally blew me away.
Spiders hate peppermint oils!
Spiders taste and smell with their legs, so they steer clear away from strong, fragrant scents such as tea tree, mint and citrus. To back this theory, a 2010 study revealed that extracts derived from the naturally occurring oils from certain plants and flowers, are extremely effective as insecticides and capable of killing many species of bugs.
For me this is great news! With my special mixture, not only will I be able to keep spiders away but it can keep them away for good!
This is what you need to make a natural spider repelling spray for the home:
- 2 cups distilled water
- 15 drops Lemon Essential Oil
- 5 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
- 1 teaspoon dish detergent
- (optional) 1 teaspoon ground Cinnamon
Directions: Mix water, lemon, peppermint and dish detergent in a spray bottle. Shake well and spray mixture around window sills, crevices and corners were spiders normally reside. Spray weekly in these areas to repel spiders from the home.
There are several other essential oil mixes that you can use that spiders detest, such as eucalyptus, lavender, tea tree and and citronella.
Feel free to experiment with different mixtures, however be sure to speak with a professional on the proper dilutions and applications if you have certain sensitivities, allergies and small pets or children at home.
I hope you really enjoyed this post! As always, Happy Cleaning!
